Current Projects

Construction season is just starting in West Michigan. At present, there are a handful of lane shifts and shoulder closures around town but nothing that should impede traffic. That will change in the coming weeks.

Upcoming Projects

Downtown GR

Portions of Division Avenue between Fulton Street and Michigan Street will be closed from February through November for utility replacement and relocation. The Division-Fulton intersection will be closed for four months starting in July.

Until July, northbound drivers can take Fulton west to Ionia Avenue and then north. Southbound drivers can take Coldbrook Street west to Monroe Avenue, Monroe south to Louis, and Louis to Fulton.

Highway Construction

131

Southbound US-131 will be closed from Burton Street to 28th Street (heading out from downtown) starting April 28. The southbound US-131 ramp to 28th Street will also be closed. Through traffic should plan on taking westbound I-196 to eastbound M-6 and then back to US-131. Local traffic may utilize westbound Burton Street, southbound Clyde Park Ave and eastbound 28th Street. This project is scheduled for completion on May 24.

During this time, the left two lanes on US-131 from Ann Street to (north of downtown) to Burton Street will be closed. Expect traffic delays. Drivers may consider taking surface streets south – for example, Ann Street east to Plainfield Ave south, which will become Division Avenue south and lead to 36th Street, from which you can re-enter southbound US-131.

Starting April 29, the northbound US-131 ramp to I-96 (north of downtown) will be closed through September 13. The detour route is northbound US-131 to southbound West River Drive to southbound US-131.

M-6 and I-96

The M-6/I96 interchange in Cascade Township (southeast of downtown Grand Rapids) is being rebuilt this summer. As a result, the eastbound M-6 ramp to eastbound I-96 is scheduled to close from April 28 through June 21The posted detour is to head north on M-37 (Broadmoor Avenue) and east on M-11 (28th Street) to eastbound I-96.

The eastbound M-6 ramp to westbound I-96 will then close from June 22 through September 8. Drivers will detour north on M-37 (Broadmoor Avenue) and east on M-11 (28th Street) to westbound I-96.

The eastbound and westbound I-96 ramps to westbound M-6 are scheduled to close July 27 through Nov. 9. You’ll detour west on M-11 and south on M-37 (Broadmoor Avenue) to westbound M-6.

M-37/I-96

The northbound/southbound ramp from Alpine Avenue (M-37) to eastbound I-96 is closed through mid-September. If you’re approaching from the south on Alpine, use westbound 3 Mile Road to northbound Walker Avenue to I-96. If you’re coming from the north, take westbound I-96 to southbound Walker Avenue to eastbound I-96. There will be a lane shift on eastbound I-96 from Walker Avenue to US-11 during this time.

I-196 BL (Business Loop)

If you’re traveling to Grand Rapids from Holland, be aware that eastbound I-196 will be closed at US-131 and detoured from April 13 to August. Westbound I-196 will then close from August to November. Traffic will be detoured to 16th St./Adams St and then onto Interstate I-196 into Grand Rapids.

Construction season is just beginning to ramp up in West Michigan. Stay tuned for more details and construction dates.
