Fun for Kids

"Grand Rapids is a great place to raise kids!"

That's the refrain you'll hear over and over from Grand Rapids residents. And it's true - this is one of the kid-friendliest places on Earth. One of downtown's biggest attractions was built just for kids - the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, 22 Sheldon Avenue NE. It celebrates childhood and the joy of learning by providing an interactive, hands-on environment that inspires learning and encourages self-directed exploration. You and your family can spend hours here!

Short Drives

One-and-a-half miles from GRCM is John Ball Zoo, 1300 West Fulton. The zoo features more than 1,100 animals from the wilds of Africa, Asia, South America and the United States. Highlights include one of the country's largest chimpanzee exhibits and a children's petting zoo.

Three miles away is Jersey Junction, 652 Croswell Street SE. This old-fashioned ice cream parlor fascinates kids and adults alike with a G-scale miniature train and photos depicting the area's resort heyday, when a roller coaster, fun house and water slides stood just around the corner on Reeds Lake. Take the short stroll to Reeds Lake and watch ducks, skiers and boaters.

Travel just under seven miles, and you'll reach the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, 4500 West River Dr. NE. This professional minor league baseball team plays 70 home games from April through October in one of the country's premier facilities.

It's just over eight miles to Craig's Cruisers, 5730 Clyde Park SW. This family fun center offers indoor and outdoor go-karts and kiddie karts, mini golf courses, bumper boats, laser tag, picnic areas, the area's largest game room and a restaurant.

In the mood for a day trip? Try Michigan's Adventure, a 40-minute drive away. Michigan's largest amusement and water park, it has more than 60 rides and attractions - including Shivering Timbers, consistently ranked one of the world's top wooden roller coasters!
