Asian Americans

In 2009, approximately 22,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders lived in the Grand Rapids metro region, led by people of Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese and Indian descent. As their numbers swell, people of Asian descent are taking on an increasingly prominent role in the life of the city. They're making significant contributions to the area economy, creating unique cultural support networks and enriching our social fabric.

  • In 2000, the Grand Rapids metro region ranked 72nd in the nation in terms of Asian-American population.
  • Only three other Midwest cities had more Vietnamese-American residents than the Grand Rapids metro area in the last census.
  • Traditional Asian values of family, hard work, ambition and achievement are shared by the people of Grand Rapids, making the city a natural destination for first- and second-generation Asian Americans.
  • The Asian Center was established in 1994 to respond to the need for culturally sensitive human services in West Michigan.
