Newcomers: The People of This Place

More than 45 ethnic groups now call West Michigan their home. Newcomers: The People of This Place is the Public Museum's newest major permanent exhibition. It includes more than 600 artifacts and images; dating from the first French fur traders to the latest influx of refugees escaping wars and others seeking a better standard of living. Interactive maps and photos show where different groups of newcomers settled in West Michigan. Compare the typical jobs and wages of three different immigrant groups. Photos, artifacts, and short video clips highlight different rites of passage concerning birth and death, coming of age, marriage, and holidays. And every group of newcomers brought a great recipe. Viva la difference!

Grand Rapids Art Museum Presents Tissot’s London 1871-1882: The Art and Culture of City Life

The paintings and prints Tissot produced over the decade of the 1870s record aspects of London’s urban culture. The city’s museums, parks, streets, taverns, and residences served as both stage and subject for his scenes of daily life. Tissot depicted city residents and visitors engaged in everyday activities, set within characteristic London architecture and gardens.

Lynn Chadwick: In Contact (Sculpture Exhibition)

One of several talented British sculptors who burst upon the international art scene in the late 1950s, Lynn Chadwick helped establish an entirely new vocabulary for this form of art. Inspired by the career of Henry Moore, Chadwick's work exhibits a fascinating evolution of personal images; a series of animals, birds, imaginary beasts and rhythmic double and/or triple figures characterized by their thrusting energy. Other more static forms called "Watchers" or "Strangers" stand alone or in totemic groups, expressing a monolithic power. The 40 medium and small sculptures, and 5 lithographs in the exhibition are drawn from the permanent collection of the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College which includes 137 works spanning the years of 1954 to 1984.

Henry Moore: Master Printmaker The Lillian Heidenberg Gift to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

Although celebrated globally as one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, Henry Moore (1898 -1986) was also a master draftsman and printmaker. Although he first experimented with printmaking in the 1930s, it became a significant part of his repertoire beginning in the 1960s. This exhibition draws from a collection of 24 master prints recently presented to Meijer Gardens by Lillian Heidenberg, one of Mr. Moore’s primary gallerists. Moore explored many of his major sculptural themes in etchings and lithographs including seated and reclining figures, mother and child, and animals. This exhibition is the premier presentation of work from this important gift to Meijer Gardens.

Through the generosity of Fred and Lena Meijer, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has assembled one of the world's foremost collections of Modern and Contemporary sculpture. In honor of the Meijer legacy and in celebration of the namesake institution's 15th anniversary, contemporary sculptors represented in the permanent collection will be displaying new work in this unique gallery exhibition. Many artists have developed a special affinity for Meijer Gardens and the Meijers themselves. Taizé Sung Prayer Service

Taizé worship consists of simple choruses, which are repeated many times and are often accompanied by instruments and vocal solos. Interspersed between the music are prayers, scripture and periods of silence. Communion, prayers for healing, and the lighting of candles are also offered at each service. The meditative Taizé worship services are open to all people and are a wonderful way to connect with God in the midst of a busy week. Join us the 1st Wednesday of the month.

Get Lost at Robinette's - Corn Maze Now Open!

The Robinettes and maze designer Brett Herbst – the world’s leading designer of 600+ corn mazes worldwide – hope to challenge the wits of those seeking to find the one exit from their mind-boggling puzzle – a unique source of good farmin’ fun for adults and children alike. Though the correct pathway can be walked in about 25 minutes, most wandering maze-goers will require about one hour to travel through more than three miles of twists, turns and decision points. Paper Dolls

I played with paper dolls as a girl. Then I grew up, got married, and raised my son. When he left for college, I found myself facing the horrors of the empty nest. I decided to get back to my roots of paper doll collecting, and I began going to clubs, meetings, and conventions all over! I have a lot of fun with it and have met wonderful people, including Julie Cain, whom I became very close with until she lost her battle with cancer this past spring. This display is done in memory of her. I am sharing a small part of my huge collection with the Coopersville Farm Museum, so check it out!

Gerben's Prodigal Son Art Collection

During 2008-09, Larry and Mary Gerbens donated their collection of prodigal son artwork to their alma mater Calvin College. This exhibition arose as a way to commemorate their gift and share this unique collection with the community. The exhibition features artwork in a variety of media by 30 artists, including original works based on the prodigal son parable and additional works commissioned on the parable by the Gerbens.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts and educated at West Point Academy, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) left America in 1855 to become a truly international artist. In an era of tourism, Whistler traveled with sketchbooks. He produced both prints and paintings that captured the romance of quiet streets, teeming avenues, and grand vistas in the cities of London, Venice and Paris. James McNeill Whistler and the Romance of Great Cities includes etchings and lithographs dating from 1859 to 1896 drawn from the collection of Joan Winchell.

Decades removed from these events, today’s historians, pundits, and politicians are still trying to understand the causes and the solution to the Great Depression, and the current economic crisis makes the lessons from Black Tuesday more relevant than ever.

Arena Racing Grand Rapids

Todd Chance Radio Show Plans "World's First Human Record"

This free event will not only set a world record but also help raise awareness and money to support Metro Health’s Compassionate Cancer Care center. The Human Record” is the brain child of Citadel Broadcasting’s Morning Host, Todd Chance. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this event seemed a perfect fit,” explains Chance. Create the world’s first vinyl record made entirely of people. “I was inspired by all of the incredible exhibits during Art Prize and thought that the ‘art of sound’ would best be displayed by a massive sing-along,” says Chance. Join one of three groups. “The Hole”, “The Label”, and “The Vinyl” are the three main components of this exhibit. Once in place, a “needle” will be lowered over the crowd, people will start walking clockwise, and sing along with the classic song “Love Lift Me Higher” by Jackie Wilson. “We’d like “The Label” to consist of breast cancer survivors or members of families affected by this disease and asking them to wear nothing but pink from the waist up – including hats if they’ve got them”.  The rest of the Human Record will be anyone wearing black (hats encouraged) and they will fill out the rest of Rosa Parks Circle as “The Vinyl”.

Renowned sculptor Beverly Pepper and her daughter, celebrated poet Jorie Graham, will discuss their works as part of the Meijer Gardens lecture series and the dedication of Pepper’s new sculpture, Meijer Wedge. The 35-foot tall sculpture will be installed in The Groves section of the Sculpture Park. The abstract work comes to a very narrow point where it meets the ground, creating a sense of tension between the spike and the ground itself. Arena Racing Grand Rapids

Drivers race real, one-half-scale stock cars-capable of speeds up to 100 mph (if run outdoors) on a custom-designed, 1/10th mile, high-banked, indoor race track. This 5K Run/Walk, 3.1 mile race course begins at the intersection of Alger Street and Eastern Avenue in the heart of the Alger Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids. Throughout the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, most people in Michigan believed that no Indians lived in the state. There was only a handful of books or few articles documenting the 19th century treaty history of the Michigan tribes. Michigan Indians were hidden from the public by myth assimilation. This presentation is about one scholar’s work to restore the public’s knowledge about the history and culture of the Michigan Indians. James McClurken has studied North American tribes for more than three decades and is the author of many books about the Little Traverse Band of Odawa, the People of the Three Fires, Ojibwe hunting and fishing rights, Indian education, among other subjects related to Native Americans.

The Museum invites the public to share in an early birthday celebration. One of the oldest cultural and natural history museums in the upper Midwest, the Grand Rapids Public Museum will celebrate its 155th anniversary on November 25, 2009 and also the 15th anniversary of the opening of the Van Andel Museum Center. Part of life and industry in West Michigan for the past half-century, Amway is the creation of two entrepreneurs - Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel - and their determination to convert dream into reality.  The exhibit tells the story of these two men and the company they established together. The Public Museum curators worked closely with Amway to cull items from company archives and craft messages that capture the firm’s unique story. The majority of items in the exhibit are on loan from Amway, including some personal items of Jay and Rich.  These include letters about their desire to start a business together, exchanged during WWII.  The exhibit also showcases some of their lesser-known ventures and products, including a bomb shelter sold by Amway during the 1960s. The exhibit will be open for one year.

StoreyTown: A Memorial Benefit for Drew Storey's Family

"Storeytown" is a community memorial for Drew Storey, who died unexpectedly in late October. The event is intended to raise money for Drew's wife (Danielle) and daughters (Madison Carol and Taylor Teagan). The event will feature remembrances from friends and family, indie video shorts Drew created, excerpts of live theatre Drew reviewed or admired, song, and a silent auction. Storey previously worked as a freelance columnist for Revue Magazine in Grand Rapids. He also spent three years as a reporter for the weekly Advance Newspapers covering local news. He was a 2002 graduate of Central Michigan University. Storey is survived by his wife, Danielle, daughters Madison Carol and Taylor Teagan, and parents, Sallie and Randy Storey, among others. Flute Orchestra Fall Concert presented by the West Michigan Flute Association

Four groups will be performing; the Middle school, the High school, the Chamber choir as well as the Adult Flute orchestra. This year the Adult Flute orchestra will be performing a piece with 35 alto flutes, 12 bass flutes, and 1 contra bass flute. This is the 1st time anything like this has been done on stage and a world record may be established. Their Journey: Vietnamese in America

In conjunction with the 2009-10 Great Michigan Read, this traveling exhibit looks at the history of Vietnamese refugees in Michigan. Their Journey: Vietnamese in Michigan augments Bich Minh Nguyen’s book, Stealing Buddha’s Dinner, a memoir chronicling the author’s migration from Vietnam in 1975 and her coming of age in Grand Rapids in the 1980. 4th Annual "Night at Your Museum" Event

Night at Your Museum, inspired by the similarly-named movie, returns this year. Each guest receives a souvenir flashlight and honorary security guard badge upon admittance to the dimly-lit Museum.
